Job Description

Position: Controller
Location: Ketchikan
Pay Range: DOE

The Controller position is a key leadership role within the Finance Department. Primary responsibilities include Accounts Payable, Payroll, Grant Reporting, Compliance, Management Reports, and partner with managers to implement objectives and goals. Reviews operating results of the programs, compares them to the established objectives and takes steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results. The Controller supervises the Accounting techs for payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable, Grants Accountant, Finance Clerk, and Procurement Clerk.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Assisting in the development accounting policies, procedures, and internal control measures to ensure adequate protection of all assets
Oversees month-end processes and issues timely monthly managerial reporting
Supervises the submission of all financial reporting for taxes and grant awards
Fostering positive work environment centered on learning and appreciation for each team member
Orientating, and training employees; and maintaining a safe working environment
Communicating job expectations; Resolving procedural problems
Providing tools and equipment necessary for staff performance accountability
Reconciles all balance sheet accounts and establishing schedules
Reviewing financial information with Program/Department Director and analyzing variances
Ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, payroll processing and reporting to internal and external parties
Coordinating and supervising preparation of audit work-papers
Studying existing and new legislation
Enforcing adherence to policy and advising management of deviations
Coaching, mentoring, and advising staff
Attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications
Conducts internal auditing as needed

Required Qualifications:
(Indian Preference: In accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934, application for the position must include verification of Indian blood.)
Knowledge of GAAP reporting;
Knowledge of federal grant, private foundation awards, state grants, and compliance principles
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including - Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents
Strong customer service in responding to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints
Ability to take verbal instruction and complete assigned project by established deadline;
Ability to maintain confidentiality of all organizational operations and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:
Skilled in SAGE/MIP accounting software program
Experience working with Tribes and federal contracting and compliance
Master’s degree in finance or CPA
