Job Description

GCI's Senior Manager of GL Accounting, manages and oversee the responsibilities, tasks, and staff for a portion of the Accounting General Ledger group.

Essential Duties of Position:
• Manage month-end process for assigned areas to ensure accuracy and timeliness of internal financial reporting
• Maintain integrity of general ledger through account reconciliations, including the research and resolution of issues as they arise;
• Manage and review work of Accounting Supervisors and Managers. Responsible for hiring, leading, developing and managing the performance by those reporting to this position; establishes and communicates clear performance expectations, makes recommendations for salary increases. Provide timely annual performance reviews to all direct reports, and ensure that all employees within the department receive annual performance reviews on time. Responsible for team results and recommends and /or approves promotions, demotions, transfers or disciplinary actions up to and including termination. Maintains effective communication and regular feedback to employees regarding their performance against expectations, and use of effective performance recognition of groups involved.
• Participate in the external audit processes.
• Other special projects as assigned.
Internal Control Considerations: Oracle system General Ledger module Manager profile, assist with the maintenance of the chart of accounts in accordance with the chart of accounts procedure; review and approve journal entries prepared by others in accordance with the journal entry procedure; review and approve reconciliations prepared by others in accordance with the reconciliations procedure. Support the Assistant Controller to ensure appropriate accounting policies and procedures are employed for the General Ledger group and are followed by yourself and your direct reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated technical knowledge of accounting procedures and solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and time management skills;
• Extensive experience using Accounting software, in particular Oracle;
• Strong organizational and time management skills;
• Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Provide strong leadership in a supervisory role and have the ability to work independently and in collaboration with upper management, external auditors, and as a team member with others at varying levels in the Company.
• Must be detail oriented and also be able to see the big picture.

• Must be highly motivated and willing to take ownership of duties and responsibilities.
• Advanced Excel software skills in creating and manipulating spreadsheets, and ability to operate 10-key by touch required.

• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible general ledger accounting experience; public accounting experience is required.
• To include four years of managing/supervising a staff of three or more professionals.
• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• BA/BS degree in Accounting or related major required.
• Certifications Required: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Reporting Relationships:
Position reports to: Assistant Controller
Number of Direct Reports: Two – Three
Number of Indirect Reports: Six - Nine

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform sedentary work. Physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. Hearing sufficient to perform job duties.

Working Conditions: Pleasant office environment. Heavy workload required periodically throughout the year. Willingness to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines. Additional hours may include working on weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or before work hours. The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
