Job Description
I. JOB SUMMARY:With little supervision, the Staff Accountant works independently on various accounting and finance projects with general or specific guidance on technical or complex matters. This position performs accounting assignments at an advanced level of complexity involving the preparation of a broad variety of financial statements, budget reports, and analyses. The daily work of this position may be specific or may rotate through job functions as projects require. This position also provides guidance and assistance to lower-level accountants and performs supervisory duties if required.
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Ensure accurate and timely month-end close and financial reporting by providing the following:
o Prepare analysis and journal entries for complex accounting areas (eg: ARO, income taxes, consolidations, eliminations).
o Prepare account reconciliations to ensure accurate financial reporting. Work with staff to research and correct any reconciling items.
o Manage mapping of accounts between JDE and Unicom and USOA (Regulatory chart of accounts).
o Manage flow of data between JDE and Unicom.
o Manage flow of data between ENSTAR accounting systems and TSU accounting systems.
o Prepare quarterly financial statements for all Alaska entities.
o Prepare variance analysis of actuals vs budget and prior year amounts.
o Prepare monthly financial report package and ensure reporting package is timely and accurate; make recommendations to management for improvements to reporting package.
o Coordinate with external tax department and TSU accounting department. Record related journal entries.
o Cross-train with Treasury Analyst and other areas as needed.
• Research technical accounting issues as required and/or work with parent company technical accounting advisors.
• Maintain a positive working relationship with other employees and departments. Exhibit professional attitude toward all internal and external customers by assisting whenever possible, providing good communication and being proactive in problem solving.
• Work with internal and external auditors to provide information and answer questions. Review results of audits and make recommendations to management regarding implementation of changes.
• Participate in the development of the department policies and procedures. Identify and analyze current accounting processes and recommend any improvements.
• Research, develop, and prepare special reports and projects as requested by management.
• Provide support on various project teams for the improvement of ENSTAR’s systems or technology as it relates to Accounting.
• Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate materials and attending related seminars.
• Coordinate and prepare special projects using established policies and procedures. Develop working relationships with other departments.
• Participate in ENSTAR training as required.
III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
• CPA preferred.
• Four or more years’ experience in Accounting. Utility accounting experience preferred.
• Broad understanding of accounting procedures, systems, and transaction flow.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications with emphasis on high-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with accounting software packages required. Knowledge of JD Edwards is preferred.
• Must possess a valid Alaska driver’s license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the ENSTAR’s Driving Policy.
• Ability to pass a drug, background, credit, past employment, and driving record screening.
IV. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to evaluate data, compile statistics, and prepare reports, graphs, tables, and charts.
• Knowledge of accounting functions and processes; ability to perform related tasks.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet strict deadlines.
• Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by ENSTAR and ability to learn new systems or software packages as necessary.
• Ability to lead and provide direction.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to deal effectively with a variety of interpersonal relationships and situations.
• Ability to work well with minimal supervision.
V. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Must maintain a positive work atmosphere through effective interactions and communications with co-workers, customers and management.
• Must maintain a safe environment for co-workers, customers and the public through adherence to established safety standards and timely reporting of potential hazards.
• Must adhere to ENSTAR’s policies and procedures related to the code of business ethics, compliance, responsible use of assets, and all applicable state and federal laws.
